Ways to Avoid a Christmas Tree Fire this Season

The holiday season is supposed to be a happy time to celebrate with family and friends. But not taking the proper precautions can lead to some pretty devastating consequences. According to the National Fire Prevention Association, there was an average of 160 home fires that started with live Christmas trees between 2013-2017. These fires caused an average of three deaths, 15 injuries, and $10 million in direct property damage annually.

It Happens Fast

The Christmas tree catching on fire might not be at the top of your mind, but things can go from festive to frightful in two minutes.

:00 - an old extension cord, frayed wire or nearby fireplace can cause a spark

:01-:15 - the spark quickly spreads due to the shape and porous nature of the tree

:15-:60 - the embers from the tree can now spread to nearby objects, such as presents and furniture, filling the room with smoke and toxic gases

:60-2:00 - the fire grows bigger, engulfing the room in heat and smoke and flames, which can spread to the rest of the house.

The speed at which a fire can spread necessitates taking precautions when decorating for the holidays.

Christmas Tree Fire Prevention Tips

The National Fire Prevention Association recommends the following:

  • Pick a tree with fresh, green needles that do not fall when touched
  • Make sure the tree is at least three feet away from any heat sources, such as heaters, fireplaces, radiators, candles or lights
  • Water the tree stand daily
  • Never use lit candles to decorate a tree
  • Replace any broken or worn lights and string together only the recommended amount of lights
  • Always turn off the Christmas tree lights before going to bed or leaving home

Other general safety tips include:

  • Make sure lights you use are labeled "UL" or "FM," meaning they've met current safety requirements
  • Only use remote spot or reflective lights on an artificial metallic tree
  • Don’t overload the electrical outlets
  • Do not tuck extension cords under the tree skirt

If a Fire Occurs…

If, unfortunately, the tree does catch fire, there are immediate steps you can take to mitigate the damage.

  • Determine the size and source of the fire. If the fire is larger than a small trash can, a fire extinguisher won’t be able to contain it. You should evacuate and call the fire department.
  • If the fire is smaller than the aforementioned trash can and is not electrical, then douse it with a bucket of water or smother it with a wet blanket.
  • If the fire is electrical, use a multi-purpose (Class ABC) home fire extinguisher.
  • In any situation, evacuate the building if the fire continues to spread. Do not attempt to save presents, ornaments or other valuables.
